Vista Receives Historic Restoration Fund Grant from State of CT
Posted on January 30th, 2015

The State of Connecticut recently designated the Captain Joseph W. Spencer House (also known as Vista’s Dormitory and Residence Hall) on Vista’s Westbrook Campus a state historic building at 1356 Old Clinton Road.
As a result of this state historic designation, Vista became eligible for a matching grant program administered by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). Following a lengthy and detailed application process, Vista is pleased to announce that they have been awarded a $200,000 matching grant from SHPO.
These state matching funds will be used to support the first phase of the Westbrook Campus Renovation Project, which includes updates and improvements that will provide accessible, safe and comfortable accommodations for Vista’s student/members. The planned renovations will improve student living conditions by adding living space, upgrading bathroom facilities and providing ADA accessibility throughout the interior of the Dormitory and Residence Hall in the Captain Joseph W. Spencer House.
The first phase of this campus renovation project is scheduled to begin in May, 2015 and is designed to be completed with minimal disruption to Vista’s programming. Additional phases of renovation will follow over the next several years. The goal of this project is to maintain the beauty of this historic home in the central district of Westbrook, while ensuring the utmost functionality for its residents. Vista is in the forefront of the movement in Westbrook to recognize its history and the value of maintaining those historic properties that have endured throughout the years.
Vista Vocational & Life Skills Center received support for this project from the State Historic Preservation Office of the Department of Economic and Community Development through Connecticut’s Historic Restoration Fund and the Community Investment Act of the State of Connecticut.
