SARAH Recreation and Leisure Services to Expand Through New Partnerships
Posted on March 17th, 2015

SARAH is pleased to announce our new initiative to expand and enhance sports, recreation and leisure activities for people with differing abilities in our community.
True to its collective missions to promote community-based services, SARAH is partnering with Special Olympics of CT (SOCT) to move from an agency driven to a volunteer driven Special Olympics program.  Erin O’Reilly will now be the local coordinator for Special Olympics and Unified Sports across the shoreline effective April 1, 2015 in time for the planning and preparation for the Summer Games.
“Volunteers are the heart and soul of Special Olympics and we are proud and fortunate to have such a strong base of dedicated and committed volunteers to take our Special Olympics program to a new level”, said Pat Bourne, Executive Director of SARAH, Inc.  “We are working together with our volunteer local coordinators and the staff of SOCT with a goal to expand Special Olympic CT athletics and Unified Sports opportunities to even more teenagers and adults throughout the shoreline.”
SARAH Recreation and Leisure Services will offer an expanded menu of other recreational and social activities as well.  Using the new facilities at Tuxis Harbor located at 433 Boston Post Rd. in Westbrook, SARAH will combine calendars, resources and offer extended hours to serve the recreational and social interests of the larger community.  Beginning with the May, 2015 calendar, Trisha Davis at Tuxis Harbor will coordinate all SARAH Recreation and Leisure services with the exception of Special Olympics CT athletics and sports teams.  All in-house activities will now be held at Tuxis Harbor.  Community based activities, such as the art class at Adams School and the dances and parties at the Guilford Community Center will continue at these locations as scheduled.
We are grateful to Cindy Mones, SARAH’s Recreation and Leisure Services Coordinator, for her many contributions in coordinating, directing and participating in hundreds of events and activities for these many years. Through her efforts, we have a solid foundation on which to build and enhance these services. Cindy will be working closely with both Erin and Trisha to ensure a smooth transition for everyone involved.
“Recreation and leisure activities are an integral part of our mission to enhance skills and enrich lives”, Bourne said.  “We could not do what we do without the support of our dedicated and committed volunteers. We are excited to offer this new initiative to take our Recreation and Leisure Services program to a new level.”
