16th Annual New Voices in Children’s Literature: Tassy Walden Awards
FREE Workshop to Prepare for Submissions of Manuscripts and Portfolios
Are you an unpublished writer or illustrator of children’s books? Have you dreamed of a chance to have your writing or portfolios reviewed by a literary agent or book publisher?
Shoreline Arts Alliance is presenting the sixteenth annual New Voices in Children’s Literature: Tassy Walden Awards competition. This contest affords unpublished Connecticut authors and illustrators of children’s books the opportunity to have manuscripts and portfolios reviewed by literary agents and possibly by editors and art directors from major publishing houses for children’s literature.
The New Voices in Children’s Literature: Tassy Walden Awards is a Connecticut statewide, juried competition opened to writers and illustrators who are not published or under contract for publication. The five categories are: Picture Book (text only), Illustrated Picture Book (author and illustrator must be same person), Children’s Book Illustrator’s Portfolio, Middle Grade Novel and Young Adult/Teen Novel. All submitted works that meet the contest guidelines will be sent to literary agents for the first tier of judging. Works selected by these literary agents will then be sent on to publishers, editors and art directors at the major publishing houses for children’s literature. Winners in each category, as determined by the judges, are awarded a $250 cash prize. All submissions for this year’s contest must be postmarked by February 1, 2016. Call for Entry may be downloaded at
Shoreline Arts Alliance in collaboration with the Guilford Free Library is offering a FREE workshop on Wednesday, October 28 from 6:30 – 8pm at the Library. The purpose of the workshop is to help writers and illustrators understand the guidelines to prepare manuscripts and portfolios for proper submission to this year’s contest. These guidelines are designed according to industry standards and so will benefit participants submitting work at any time to agents, editors or art directors. The workshop will be facilitated by founding members of the Tassy Walden Awards committee and by winners and finalists of the New Voices in Children’s Literature competition, many of whom are now published or under contract for publication. The facilitators will review the submission guidelines and the current industry standards and provide insight and answer questions related to getting your work "out there" to literary agents and publishers. Reservations are requested to ensure adequate number of handouts. Please register on-line at or by phone at 203-453-8282. For questions regarding the competition or entry eligibility visit, email or contact the office at (203) 453-3890.
