Shoreline Arts Alliance Artspace Welcomes Branford to the Carriage House Gallery at Women and Family Life Center
Posted on September 30th, 2015

Branford Artist Emer Gearhardt will have a collection of her watercolor and oil paintings on display in the Carriage House Gallery of Women & Family Life Center, 96 Fair Street, Guilford through November 30. The Shoreline ArtSpace Series is a collaborative art exhibition between Shoreline Arts Alliance and local town governments, other nonprofit and community businesses.
Emer says she first began painting in kindergarten but not until high school did she really feel that she was an ‘artist.’ At that time she was introduced to watercolor and acrylics and began to feel a certain freedom when she painted. As an art minor in college Emer learned a valuable lesson and one that she stresses with her students today. A professor told her to “Never be afraid of the dark” which at the time she took quite literally. The professor was making the point that the drama that comes from the play between dark and light is what makes each piece more enticing. She continued to grow as an artist and experiment with different mediums and stretching her abilities. She has been teaching art at the Guilford Community Center for five years and says that now “Painting for me is a very spiritual experience.” As a teacher she continues to stress how important it is to break down composition, so as to not be overwhelmed but rather enjoy the experience. “It’s okay to be lost in your work---you’re not on I-95” she says.
There will be an Artist’s Reception on Friday, October 23 from 5:30 – 7:30pm. The reception is open to the public. Parking is available on the street.
Hours at the Carriage House Gallery are by appointment. Please call 203-458-6699 to schedule an appointment.
