Step by step, hundreds of people helped make a positive impact in the lives of others by walking in the annual WALK for Vista fundraising event on Sunday, Oct. 25th.
Despite passing rain showers, 283 people and 34 fundraising teams raised over $54,000 for Vista Vocational & Life Skills Center, a community-based education program for individuals with disabilities. A portion of those proceeds benefit Vista’s Ed Gallant Financial Aid Fund, which provides scholarship opportunities for students and members in Vista's programs.
This year’s event was held at Vista’s Madison Campus and featured 3 and 5 mile routes through downtown and along the shoreline. Prior to the walk, participants fueled up on snacks generously provided by Cohen’s Bagels and Lyman Orchards. Jessica Demers of Body Karma Studio in Clinton, one of Vista’s many community partners, got walkers’ blood pumping by leading a group Zumba warmup.
State Sen. Ted Kennedy Jr. of Connecticut’s 12th District, which includes Madison, made a special appearance and gave a pep talk before officially sending walkers on their way.
Walkers enjoyed an after party featuring music by Vista member and DJ Matt Fitzgerald, maple kettle corn donated by Bureau's Sugarhouse and a raffle. Prizes included giveaways from 9 Town Transit, the Boston Red Sox, the Hartford Yard Goats and Creations, Vista’s social enterprise. Several teams were also recognized during this time for their team spirit and fundraising efforts.
Vista would like to thank event sponsors Essex Printing, Walgreens, Shore Publishing, Vornado Realty Trust and Gowrie Group.
