Vista Member Named 'Rising Star' by Big Y

​Hard work pays off. Just ask Vista member Sean Leverette, a service clerk at the Old Lyme Big Y whose excellent work ethic earned him the distinction of being named February’s “Rising Star” at his store.
 
The Star of the Month program was created to recognize outstanding Big Y employees, said Amanda Webster, Sean’s supervisor. In order to be nominated for the award, employees must meet certain criteria. Chief among them is exemplifying Big Y’s “Firm Foundations,” which translates into going above and beyond what is expected.
 
“I’ve been with Sean since day one and he’s just fantastic,” Amanda said. “I wish I had 20 Seans.”
 
Sean, a Guilford resident, has been employed at Big Y since last March and works a minimum of 25 hours a week. As a service clerk, his responsibilities include bagging groceries, assisting customers, collecting carriages and shopping baskets, and restocking items.
 
Although a model employee, Sean was not expecting to be recognized by his colleagues.
 
“I am very proud of myself,” he said with a smile. “When I found out, I was surprised and happy.”
 
Sean’s work ethic is also noticed by customers.  Each month, the store runs a friendly competition amongst its baggers based on positive customer feedback. In the most recent challenge, he racked up more than 50 positive customer comments.
 
The secret to Sean’s success? He enjoys interacting with customers.
 
“I try to socialize with them,” he said. “I’ll ask how their day is going or what their weekend was like.”
 
A native of New Jersey, Sean, 20, came to Vista Life Innovations—formerly Vista Vocational & Life Skills Center—in 2014. Vista is a nationally accredited community-based education program for individuals with disabilities with campuses in Madison, Westbrook and Guilford.
