The Guilford Parks and Recreation Department and Guilford Youth & Family Services are pleased to announce their commitment to the United Nation’s International Day of Peace on September 21st.  In celebration of this Day we will be coordinating a town-wide Art Exhibit.  We are seeking artists of all ages to participate.  The theme for this year’s International Peace Day is:
Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All
The International Day of Peace was first created in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly as a day to celebrate peace among all.  Again in 2001, the General Assembly designated the day as a day of non-violence.  Each year, communities are encouraged to participate and show their commitment to Peace.
Over the past 7 years, a moment of silence has taken place on the Guilford Green with churches ringing their bells in unison to celebrate the day. This year, the peace celebrations will take place at 4:00 PM on the Guilford Green. All are welcome!
Rules for the art contest:

All ages are encouraged to participate
Theme:  Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for all
Art can be submitted on paper, canvas, photography (up to 18 x 24)
Submissions to be received by Ellen Clow, Recreation Supervisor, by Thursday, September 7th  at the Community Center, 32 Church St. Guilford, CT 06437.
Art will be displayed in various locations around the Town of Guilford.  If you are a business owner interested in displaying a piece(s) of art work, please contact Ellen Clow at 203 453-8068 or
Art will be posted to the Town of Guilford Facebook page for all to view.  Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 “liked” submissions.

This week’s Branford Jazz performance will feature vocalist Shawnn Monteiro, legendary jazz drummer Jimmy Cobb and Javon Jackson on tenor sax.   With Monteiro’s lively phrasing and scat variations reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan, Cobb hailing from the Miles Davis bands, and Jackson’s long time association with Art Blakley and the Jazz Messengers, Thursday’s performance is sure to be a showstopper.  As it does every Thursday with Branford’s jazz-on-the-green concert series, the music starts at 6:30p on Thurdsay, the 27th.
And there will be more jazz on Friday evening.  Not letting the thunderstorms from a couple of weeks back stop them, PELIROJA will bring its fusion jazz sound to Branford on Friday the 28th, starting at 7pm. Please note the slightly later start time for this make-up concert.   The gifted ensemble of musicians includes Mike Eckroth on piano and keyboards, vocalist Jainardo Batista,  baritone saxophonist Morgan Price, Jonathan Powell on trumpet, drummer Max Goldman, and Ian Stewart on electric bass work their magic on stage and fuse together the sounds of Ethiopia, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and the Congo for a new jazz favor.
For more details about these jazz greats and to whet your appetite for some of the best jazz around, please check out the schedule on the Branford Jazz website at, and remember to visit the website or Branford jazz on Facebook for updates and weather cancellations.  Please take a moment and share this jazz update with your customers, patrons, colleagues, family, friends and neighbors by forwarding this email or posting it on Facebook, Instagram and your social media network.

Free Financial Basics Workshop for College-Bound Students

Discover how to manage money, avoid substantial credit card debt and more

NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (July 17, 2017) – College is an exciting opportunity for many teens as made evident by the crowds of eager students this time of year with shopping carts full of decorative pillows, full-length mirrors, and bulk-sized snacks.

However, with the cost of a college education continually growing, it is imperative to avoid poor spending habits and unnecessary debt. Before embarking on the next phase of their educational careers, prospective students are invited to learn how to manage expenses during “Financial Basics for College-Bound Students,” a FREE seminar from Connex Credit Union as part of its ConnexCares philanthropic initiative.

You do not need to be a member of the credit union to attend this award-winning workshop. An experienced Connex Financial Advocate will provide insight on money management, credit cards, checking accounts, student discounts and more.  While the material is designed for recent high school graduates, the information is also pertinent for currently-enrolled students.

Two sessions are available:

Thursday, August 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Connex’s North Haven Branch located at 412 Washington Ave.

Tuesday, August 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the North Branch of the Bridgeport Public Library located at 3455 Madison Ave.

While Connex encourages guests to attend in person, a webinar option is available during the August 3 session only for anyone unable to attend either date.

This seminar is FREE, but registration is required and can be completed by visiting or by calling 1-800-CR-UNION (1-800-278-6466). During this process you will select if you plan to attend in person or via webinar. The workshop is open to members and non-members of the credit union, but act fast, seats are limited.

Support a Child in Need This August With Hair Cuttery’s Share-A-Haircut Program

For each haircut purchased, one free haircut certificate will be donated to a child in need prior to the start of the new school year.
Vienna, Va., July 5, 2017 – Hair Cuttery, the largest family-owned and operated chain of hair salons in the country, will be conducting its annual Share-A-Haircut program benefiting underprivileged children as they head back to school this year. From August 1-15, for every child up to age 18 who purchases a haircut at one of Hair Cuttery’s nearly 900 salons, one free haircut certificate will be donated to a disadvantaged child in the community.
“It is important for every child to begin the new school year with a sense of confidence and excitement,” said Dennis Ratner, Founder and CEO of Hair Cuttery. “While a back-to-school haircut may seem like a basic necessity to most, for some it’s a luxury. Our Share-A-Haircut program ensures that children, regardless of their financial circumstances, will look and feel good about themselves as they get ready to start the new school year.”
Within the first two weeks of August, Hair Cuttery is aiming to donate tens of thousands of free haircut certificates ahead of the new school year. Certificates will be distributed with the help of more than 100 local government and non-profit organizations in communities across the country.
Since 1999, the Share-A-Haircut program has donated more than 2.16 million free haircut certificates valued at nearly $35 million.
2017 marks the 18th year of Share-A-Haircut, with Hair Cuttery’s most recent campaign donating more than 81,000 haircuts to survivors of domestic violence this past spring. The company has an established history of charitable giving and has supported a range of local and national causes, including St. Baldrick’s Foundation, American Red Cross, The National Network to End Domestic Violence, American Cancer Society and Girls on the Run.
